Default Rockland and Cambridge

I'm considering a job that's currently located in Rockland. However, they are running out of space and some employees will be moved to Cambridge (probably near MIT?) for a year or two. Unfortunately, I probably won't know whether I'll be working in Rockland or Cambridge until after I move, so I'd like to find some place that would be reasonably accessible to both places.

Any thoughts on where I should look? I'd be looking for an apartment, and I'm not really a city person. I'd like to find something very quiet, and reasonably priced would be a plus.

Karen

I'd start looking around Braintree -- you can take the red line from there right to MIT and its close to Rockland for a driving commute.

Agreed.
Quincy is filled to bursting with apartment/condo complexes also, not to mention older apartment buildings and two-and-three-family houses. The sections I like best are Adams Shore, Squantum, West Quincy, and Wollaston. Not only are there three Red Line stations in the city, there's also fairly good bus service to them from more outlying areas. Each of the neighborhoods I've mentioned are well established, quiet, and secure. It's a renter's as well as a buyer's market these days, so you should have no trouble finding a reasonable (relative to the area) rent amount for a nice living space.
Then, if you wind up in Cambridge you could either remain on the South Shore or look for a place in West Cambridge or North Cambridge, Watertown, Belmont, or Arlington: same quality of life, comparable range of housing choices at a similar cost.
