Boston is my dream city and I got admitted to UMass Boston once as a transfer student but life got in the way. Now, as I grow older, I'm researching more and more instead of just heading for the coast. I know MA is widely respected for its quality of education. Is UMass a good school? In the midst of MIT, Harvard, BU, etc. its hard for me to know. I just want to know if UMass is a respected school as well? I would love to reclaim residency of my birth city and get my BA finally.

Well, I'll take a stab. UMass Boston is a bit different than the other state colleges. It's a commuter school - no dorms, so it draws all of its students from the local area. It is my impression that its admission standards are on a lower scale than the other well-known private universities in Boston. Its application pool is not as competitive. I would also venture that the admission standards are probably lower than the state's flagship school, UMass Amherst. However, the tuition costs at UMass Boston are a bargain compared to the $40k+ you'll pay for a famous name school, and about half the cost of UMass Amherst. I do know a few students who wentthrought he nursing program, and are doing just fine.
