Because Im not a resident of Boston- just someone who is going to visit and hoopefully relocate there- excuse my lack of knowledge in geography, but can someone tell me exactly where Southie is? Am I safe to assume its South Boston? And what kind of area is it- in terms of living, commuting, safety etc..

Southie is an Irish neighborhood with mostly local people but an increasing amount of yuppies. If you live on the east side there are a ton of buses that come out of city point that will bring you to downtown, back bay, dorchester, waterfront ect. On the west side you have many of the same buses and broadway t station. Southie has its rough spots, there are a couple of housing projects and a few sketchy bars. But overall its pretty safe for an urban area.

There is an Irish Cultural Center in Canton MA that you may be interested in:
http://www.irishculture.org

Their annual event is coming up soon:
ICONS Irish Music and Arts Festival 2008

There are Irish people all around Boston, not just South Boston, Charlestown, and Dorchester. West Roxbury and Brighton within Boston are very Irish. Towns like Norwood have an Irish influence...

I am the product of a mixed marriage as my father would say; he is from Galway and my mother is from Roscommon....
