Default Work in Rockland, live in Boston?

I am considering a job in Rockland and would prefer to live in an urban environment. Either a smaller, walkable town or Boston proper. Have 2 kids, 12 and 8 year old, so schools and safety definetely a consideration.
Don't know much about Boston and area, so suggestions are welcome.

Given the ages of your kids, I recommend Brookline or Newton for a more urban feeling than Rockland. You will probably not want to deal with the Boston Public Schools, and Brookline and Newton are separate towns/cities, but connected to downtown Boston via the Green Line. Though, depending on your budget, a place in either of these areas might be too expensive. Milton might be a good option as well, it's a little farther outside of Boston proper, less urban, though your commute would be shorter than traveling from Brookline or Newton. Some other spots to look at are Quincy or Hingham, with the latter being the most suburban of all the towns mentioned so far, it's more of a beach/country club kind of place, but the schools are good.

If you are considering private schools and wouldn't mind a longer commute, we could suggest areas in the city based on your budget.

I agree with RemiJp. Even if you were cool with suburbia, Rockland would not be a good choice. Hingham, Norwell and Hanover are all good but very suburban.

Consider the likes of Braintree, Quincy, Milton, Stoughton etc. Boston would be a hassle to commute to Rockland each day.

Thumbs up Try Dedham, Brookline Village, Weymouth, Norwood, or quincy

If I were you I'd consider Quincy, Weymouth, Norwood, Sharon, Stoughton, Dedham, Milton, Brookline/Brookline Village, and West Roxbury.

Brookline Village area if you can afford it is especially nice with 'T" access into Boston

Weymouth is pretty nice, right next to Rockland

Dedham or Westwood might work well as well as Norwood.

Norwood has pretty good schools as does Dedham and Westwood

Brookline schools are pretty good too.
