Hmm... I didn't know about Mansfield but from your description it sounds like a good place. Thanks for bringing this to my notice. I will look in that area as well.

I think your original idea to look in Norwood / Canton is a good one. You can find rents in your range and the postings here are dead on the two towns are almost identical in school systems, crime rates, etc. Canton feels a bit more suburban, Norwood has a nice center with lots of shops. Norwood is building a new High School. Not sure what the ETA is for that.

Nothing against the other towns mentioned - but West Roxbury and Roslindale are part of Boston and subject to the schools system there. Urban school systems are not going to be as good. Dedham has a higher crime rate than Norwood or Canton.

To me, Mansfield is just too far from Boston.

Norwood has more to do (restaurants, nightlife). Canton is totally out there (even though it's actually closer to Boston). I work in Canton, and have to drive four miles to the nearest restaurant. However I think in terms of schools and safety, which is more of a factor for you, Canton is probably a little better.

Have you thought about West Roxbury? near Centre Street, or J.P. All are near the T without
the dollars of Newton for rent. Centre street is the main street goes to all 3 with the Holy Name,
etc onward towards Dedham, which is ! Read the Boston Globe for ideas. These area are safe, and many firemen, and policemen do reside there,
just do your own research. Also it does not mean forever! Mansfield, is somewhat far out for now, maybe later. She does not need to consider Harvard yet, think about your commute, and winter, and being home for step one.
