Been here six years and have ONE friend. People are polite but there's a wall around most people I meet. I've even lived in NYC and I find that place to be MUCH more friendly!!
Saying that...I've lived in Chicago, too. Chicago is more honestly RUDE. I had a great church there so that made me happy. I also had more job opportunities at that time. (I think Boston stinks in that regard, too. If you want to work for a university or a hospital I suppose it's o.k.).
If I had to choose between NYC, Boston or Chicago (and that were my ONLY options) I'd take NYC. The rents aren't that much lower in Boston than New York. Or if you decide to move here, live in a nearby suburb of Boston; DON'T live in the city if you're going to move here!!
WOW! I've never found Chicagoans to be rude. Except if you're driving in the high speed lane on the expressway and holding up traffic, then I can understand them being rude, though. Do you find people in Boston to be uptight, or is it something else?

I find Bostonians to be weird. Polite but cold so I guess uptight is a good word. My sister lived in Chicago for more than 20 years and even she admitted they were rude. We're both looking forward to moving back to the south.

Eevee, you missed italian, Jewish and German, ;-). Globally Chicago is ranked #8 as a place to live. Each of the mega metropolitan cities are different than their counterparts. Chicago isn't famous for its baked beans or clam chowder, but on the other hand Boston doesn't have the oldest zoological park in the nation or Lake Michigan. I think you would be perfectly happy living in Chicago, but before you move you should come and spend a few days and find one of the old cabbies that knows the city to give you a tour.

Please read my post above comparing the economies of Boston and Chicago. The hard data says that Boston outpaced Chicago in all sectors except one last year. We all understand that you "hate boston with a passion" and that is your opinion (even though it strikes me as a little sad that you are so overly emotional about it) but it would be appreciated that if you are making a statement about something like job opportunities that it be backed up by facts.
