Default commute from Malden to Mass General

Does anyone have estimates about the total time to commute from Malden to Mass General Hospital? Probably would take public trans. most days and unless we find a place right at a train station would require bus/train combination.

Rarely would have to drive in but need to keep that option open.

Also, are garages common for Malden large rentals (4 bedroom )? I am trying to get comparisons for commute times between areas much farther out but on the commuter rail where houses probably have garages - and wouldn't require shoveling in winter.

Thanks.

Am looking into Malden because I have read here that it is a safe area w/generally lower housing costs than Brookline or Cambrige areas. Open to other suggestions.

the commute won't be too bad if you live somewhere close to the orange line. Mass General is about a 10-20 minute walk from North Station, which is on the orange line. walking from Mass General to North Station can get slightly iffy at night due to shady looking homeless people, but it's safe (lots of residents nearby, the Garden right across the street. if there's a game or an event, plan on North Station being very, very crowded)

You could also take the orange line a few stops farther, to Downtown Crossing, and then switch to the Red Line to MGH. Would take a little longer, but it's only three stops on the red, and would save you the walk if you were working late.

Thanks for your responses! The level of detail is very helpful in narrowing down specific places to begin apt. hunting.
