DH is checking into a Fellowship at Brigham & Women's Hospital which is located on Francis Street in what is described as the Longwood Area of Mission Hill. Does anyone know anything about this area? We are a family of four with two daughters, who will be 10 & 7. We would probably be looking to rent a 3 -4 bedroom home or condo and would be looking for a SAFE neighborhood with GREAT SCHOOLS. What kind of rental $ would we be looking at and how long/rough a commute? I've only been to Boston once for a day so really am not familiar with the city at all - so any info would be appreciated. (We walked part of the Freedom Trail, which was very enjoyable; but also spent about 3 hours driving from the airport to our hotel, which was not so enjoyable! Is driving any easier when you get away from the city, proper???) Thanks!

You will want to be in the Lawrence School district of Brookline, which is literally steps from the Longwood Medical area. Or Lincoln School, which is a bit further.

You don't want to live in Longwood or Mission Hill with kids--it's not particularly inviting, and Boston Public schools are not known for their quality, as Brookline's schools are.

Driving is a pain here in Boston and close-by areas--the roads are old and most people are lost....

But Brookline is very manageable for driving. I only get lost in the estate area, not the urban areas.

Good luck!

BLS (Boston Latin School - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) and Winsor (The Winsor School - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) are in the Longwood area but they both have strict admissions standards. Brookline is a good bet and is located right next to the Longwood Area. If you want to drive, the suburbs are definitely kinder than the city.
