I'm almost always the one sticking up for the nice parts of Roxbury, but I try to make sure I point out that most of that neighborhood is pretty rough. the guy is apparently coming from Orlando, FL, and, AFAIK, giving his limited posting history, may not know the area all that well. unfortunately, the OP has given NO info into what his needs are, besides the fact that he's looking for a Sec 8 apartment, which by itself is going to put him in some rough places (it's not like anyone can recommend a Sec 8 apartment in Newton or Lexington). if the OP is specifically looking at this place b/c it takes vouchers, than needless to say, he may be in a bad part of Brockton
I assumed your first post was sarcasm... I've seen you defend parts of Boston (particularly ROX) and you have the reputation to prove that you do more than leave narrow-minded posts. The other poster has 16 posts and a reputation of 10 or 12. When given the opportunity to say why he made the statement he did, he chose to make a sarcastic rebuttle to goyguy's post.

I will clarify that I've never lived in Brockton. I have family and friends there so I am familiar with the area, but I don't have the experience of someone who lives there. However, the safer parts of Brockton are (mostly) the ones located along the fringes of town; PARTICULARLY close to the W. Bridgwater line and many areas East of Downtown. Areas along Southern Copeland Street (and neighborhoods branching off of this street), Plain Street, Eastern Crescent Street, and areas off of N. Quincy Street and Howard are safer and more family oriented.

The reason I stand up for Brockton is because this kind of bashing without reason (actually, more like bashing without stating a reason... there are reasons not to live in Brockton) type thread happens to more than a few Massachusetts neighborhoods and towns. It amazes me how many people still believe that Dorchester is one giant, bad neighborhood... not the collection of diverse, smaller neighborhoods (some good, some bad) it really is. This happens in cities like Lowell, Lawrence, Haverhill, Fall River, Worcester (really bad in Worcester), New Bedford, Springfield, Fitchburg, etc.

You are, however, right. Section 8 housing is going to put the OP in some tough spots. The Caffrey Towers are in a fringe area. It's not SO bad, but not exactly ideal either. Unfortunately, being limited to section 8 may make it difficult to find something, "stellar."

Ok here are my examples.....I took my family to the Brockton Fair last year.I witnesses a fight where a young man pulled out a stiletto and stab another young man approximatley 5 feet away from my family.Just drive down town where you will see borded up houses , borded up businesses , women walking around in next too nothing walking up to cars asking if you need a "date" or if they have any "rock." . If you hear firecrackers in January its mostly 9mm gunfire. Look up at wires and you will see sneakers hanging from them , that marks a gangs turf.
I'm not saying the whole city is a toilet but the bad definatley outweighs the good.Remember that that is my opinion and what I have seen.We are all here and give our varying opinions where we all can either accept it or argue it . I wouldnt live there.

The neighborhoods on the city's western edge, near Stoughton, Easton, and Stonehill College, are relatively safe and decent. There are some really nice looking townhouses near Westgate Mall at the northwestern corner of Brockton with fancy names such as Chateau Westgate, I'm sure they're good too. The eastern edge near Abington oughtn't be too bad either. Just stay away from the city center (really decrepit and run-down as described very well by Boston Medic), much of the south side, and parts of the north side. I would be very wary of section 8 housing in Brockton.

Fair enough. I don't think anyone could argue with that post. Can't deny what you've seen and this post will be a lot more beneficial to the OP. Didn't mean to accuse you of anything, just too many people here bash towns they don't like for no reason and scare people off. I'm not surprised by your experiences nor are you the only one I've ever heard of with similar experiences in Brockton. Thanks for clarifying.

yeah, pay not attention to all that you just said, also pay no attention to the fact that it has the highest ranking high school band in the country for many years and that people all over the county come to our horrific town just to see them play. also pay no attention to the mansions on the west side. also pay no attention to the friendly open minded people that are that way as a result of people like you socially out casting others based on a label.

Pardon my asking but who are you replying to? There is no quote in reply.

I for one like Brockton. Its out of the way for me but I relish in visiting it every time I have a chance. The west side is definitely delightful, the city high school definitely runs efficiently (unlike many of our schools in Boston), and the Westgate Mall is my all time favorite shopping mall . No, really, it is.

Brockton High is certainly not eye candy, and like every school, has its flaws, but there's a lot of good about BHS. I love Campanelli Stadium for both games and concerts (I got suckered by a girl I liked into going to Jack Johnson a few years ago and it ended up being a good time).

There's a lot to like about Brockton.
