Washington Square is actually in Brookline on the "C" Branch of the Green Line (Beacon Street). From what I recall, having worked in that area years ago, it is about four or five stops away from Coolidge Corner and has a few shops and restaurants as well as a nearby supermarket.

There's a multitude of Washington St's and Ave's in the Boston area. Washington Square in Brookline is named for the one which runs diagonally from Brighton to Brookline Village. While situated within Brookline, Washington Square (the vicinity of the Washington/Beacon intersection) is only a short distance south of the Brighton line.

That's a nice neighborhood well worth looking into. Might cost some extra $$$ especially within Brookline, but the trolley line makes it super convenient. There's a Star Market on Beacon and a Whole Foods on Washington when it's time for the pleasure of grocery shopping, some trendy watering holes, the Golden Temple for "grabbing some Chinese" (takeout or dine-in), and even a large funeral home. And if kids are in the picture or in the future, Brookline's public schools are among the best of the best.
