Default Boston EMS

I've been considering a move to Boston for some time now. I grew up in CT, moved to Florida and now want New England back. I'm a Paramedic and I've been doing some research into Boston EMS. Apparently, the only hire Paramedics within and you must start as an EMT for at least 1 year before being promoted. Anyone on here have experience with that process? There is also a Boston residency requirement, how do you survive on a 36,000 starting salary living in Boston?!! Thats just crazy. Do they offer a lot of overtime, housing stipends, or discounts?

Is it possible to survive on $36,000 living within the city limits of Boston without renting a 200sq/ft shack with 4 roomates? I'd prefer a 1 bdroom not in the vicinity of undergrad central or the ghetto. I also have a dog and a Jeep (pretty new and I'd take a huge hit if I sold it). Thoughts?
