Default Move to Marblehead?

I am interested in hearing about what it's like to live in Marblehead with young children. What are the schools like? How would you characterize the different neighborhoods? What is the best way to commute to Boston? Anything else I should know about living there?

Marblehead is as good as it gets. Gorgeous - period. Right on the ocean, and they have a whole neighborhood full of homes dating back to the 1600's. Sailing yachting, great. Commute to Boston down 1A, 1, or you can get the rail at Swampscott. Salem is right there with all the witchypoos waiting to spook you up.

I share these questions, and would love to add another -- how snooty is it? I have visited/looked at houses and found it and the people we met all quite delightful, but I hate elitism and have heard some not so good things....

I rented up there from '99-'01 and found everyone to be very friendly. The only reason I left was because the commute downtown became a PITA.

Avoid the super-wealthy Neck and some obviously elitist-leaning social organizations like yacht clubs or country clubs and you should be fine. Even many of the people there are not so terribly elitist. The town is on the upscale side, and as a result you might eventually run into some elitist types and some overly precious shops, but there are plenty of down to earth people in town. Go hang out at the Barnacle or the Three Cod and you'll see them.

It's hard to evaluate the not so good things you've heard. Some people think all of coastal New England is snooty and elitist (I have a friend from central Michigan who was very intimidated by just about everything in Massachusetts). I know another guy from a rough part of Somerville who thought Marblehead was snooty but had never been there. One day we went for a ride up and he had a nice time. If it wasn't such pain to get to, I'd live there, and I don't like elitism much either.

Great answers, thanks!

One more question. How long does it take to get to 128 from Marblehead during rush hour? And how early do you have to leave to avoid rush hour?

I was working a 10-6 shift when I was living up there, and tried to give myself at least an hour and 15 for my drive to Wonderland, and ride to the State St stop. Atlantic Ave and Humphrey St as well as 1A could get backed up, and usually did.

But that's going through Swampscott and Lynn to the T in Revere, not cutting across Salem to 128. I'm hoping someone with more day-to-day experience can help with this question, but in my experience it's quicker if you don't go through the heart of downtown Salem.

Default room rental

Hi

How about renting rooms or small apartments? Is the cost prohibitive?
