You could drive in to Boston but parking near the event will be pricy (still probably cheaper than the train for five people).

If you don't want to drive the whole way, the easiest way, without regard to cost, might be the Amtrak Downeaster train. It goes from Exeter to North Station, right below the Garden. But it runs about $30 round trip per person and the schedule is somewhat limited.

You can also drive an hour or so to Anderson/Woburn station (95 to 495 to 93 South). They have a big parking lot for something like $4 and the commuter rail ride from there (also to North Station on the Lowell line) is about 20-30 mins and cheaper than Amtrak.

I think parking at the Garden is something like $25 for a car and it's right off of 93, so it's the easiest and most inexpensive way to do it. If you really want to save and it's a night or weekend game, park over at the Government Center garage, Dock Square Garage, or anything closer to Faneuil Hall which is about a 10 minute walk (through perfectly safe areas) from the Garden. You may be able to find some parking on the street over there for free. The garages a bit further away from the Garden have low rates for nights and weekends too.

I still say that for 5 people, it's cheaper and more convenient to park at the garden. Take I-93 south and follow the signs to North Station/ TD Banknorth Garden (they're actually the same building) and park there. The garage is underneath the train station which is underneath the arena.
