It's cheaper to just use uber/lyft especially since you live close to public transportation.
I could like in NYC, its just that I was there for a while. Save up my money to where I don't have to work anymore? How much would that be?

Why does this country have to have at will employment, it caused my situation. No ownership or standards for managers at all in my industry.

It depends on your lifestyle. What are your monthly expenses? Say you spend 3k a month- you'll need 36k a year to be able to live your current lifestyle. If you estimate you'll live another 50 years, you'll need at least 1.8 mil+ (adjusting for inflation and etc.)

There are private/public companies and government positions that have unions. Once you work for the MBTA, it'll probably take an act of god for you to get fired.

Depends on your housing situation here - if you have that squared away, you'll definitely have regrets about leaving. If you're spending most of your paycheck on a rat-infested shoebox, you'll have regrets about not leaving sooner.

Frankly having a cruddy manager has nothing to do with Boston. Live wherever you prefer and make sure next time you are interviewing for jobs you ask the questions you need to ask. It is not hard to figure out why they are filling a position or how long your manager to be has been managing teams, etc. This was just a way for the world to teach you what to look out for next time.

How would you do that other than reaching out to people that worked for them before?
I would appreciate your advice if you want to send me a private message that would be great. This woman probably would have just lied anyway, but I still want to hear what you have to say.

I'm a bit confused by this. So you start a job and the person that had the job before starts sending you emails or did you start emailing them?

I work in government and frankly I'm the 6th person to have the job in 10 years. Some go onto bigger and better things. Not everyone stays in the same position for 30+ years. Could I have questions about the last person that had the job? Yeah maybe initially but then it fades. I'm there, not them.

Can bosses be demanding? Sure but with education you learn that not everyone wants things the same way or the same times etc. Grad school really put that into my mind.

Keep in mind that frankly you can outlast bad people. My skin is thicker than a stack of pancakes from IHop.

To be frank not everyone that works in boston lives in boston and vice versa. I don't make six figures but I did do a fair amount of research before hand. Looked at rents, supermarkets, traveling etc. Looked up the backgrounds of other people to a point so I know what to expect. Do your due diligence.

I reached out to them as I had concerns about the way the role was going almost immediately. The manager was very controlling and the I was the third person in that role and the manager was only there nine months which is a huge red flag.

6th person in the job in 10 years is not the same situation

we moved from Boston to Providence 15 years ago when we were both working and got twice the house and knew that Boston was within reach either by car or train. We don't regret the move at all and where we used to go frequently to Boston, now retired we go but once or twice a month.

I moved away in 2009 to Charleston South Carolina. Besides the Sox , and the Pats I do not miss anything about the area. The housing market is obtainable , the air is cleaner , the people are nicer. The weather is so much better , You do not have to shovel sunshine. I grew up in Newton and that city has changed so much that it is not affordable to anyone making under 55K a year. I am glad I left and do not regret it any minute
