Massachusetts auto insurance is still high even though they have let some competition into the state. They still don't have a true free market auto insurance like many other states. If you have some accidents or "points" on your record, where you live, and depending what type of car you have $2,000 to $3,000 is possible. Also, how many cars and people are you insuring.
I just switched over to Plymouth Rock from Commerce and Plymouth Rock was quite a bit less expensive.

Yes, it depends on your driving record, how many cars, and where you live. New York State does have a typical free market system and the rates are even higher than in Mass. Some places tend to be expensive to insure a car because there are more accidents there due to more cars on the road, winter conditions, etc. Interestingly, rates are much lower in Belmont or Lexington than neighboring Waltham. They base the rates in part on actuarial tables to establish the "risk" of accident or theft in each locality.

Try Progressive. I recently switched from Commerce, and my insurance dropped by more than 50%.

AAA gave me a very good rate. You can use esurance.com to compare rates....

$3000 for one car? I have 3 cars and 4 drivers (two are teenagers) and it costs me $2200 per year in NH... A few years ago it was $650 per year when we had just two cars and no teenage drivers...

Personally I don't know anyone paying $3000 except one person with a really bad record who lives right in Boston. I have heard of some companies giving quotes that are double the cost of the same coverage with someone else, for no good reason.
