You might look in Winchester, its a great town, close to everything, Commuter rail access into the city, or quick 15 min drive to Alewife or Oak Grove "T" stations.
Arlington is a nice town as well with shops, a bike trail, public transit, etc. (busses and Alewife Red Line is nearby)(busses connect to the station or Davis Square)
Davis/Teele Square area would be good too as well as Medford Tufts University area (Near Davis Square)
Wakefield is a nice community as well with a cool lake to walk around
or bike around
a Forest reservation in town (Breakheart, with trails, jogging paths, a public swimming hole on a lake).
There are bus lines to Oak Grove that run regularly. or you could drive to Oak Grove and park
take the orange line in
So I would say Wakefield, Winchester, Davis Square/Teele Square , Medford/Davis Sq Area, and Arlington would be ones to look into
South of Town I would say check out Quincy, Hingham, Newton, Norwood, Needham
maybe Brookline too though Brookline is pricy

Quincy would work, but maybe as one poster did say JP for an easy trip into Boston. One place,
maybe you might wish to check out is Mission Hill, near the Mission Church, for easy access into
Boston. I have not been there for a long time, but, I heard now, it is not too bad. I never did not feel unsafe there either. Also Arlington is a real quiet safe place. Narrow your wish list down, when you pick the school. You can also check out real estate in the Boston Globe online! You also could place
an ad in the Boston Globe, asking for what you need! Then, when you visit you may have a better idea. In Rossie, JP, Mission Hill, there are many older
people, who rent out apartments, and cats are no problem! South Boston, may be somewhat costly, but check it out!

Malden/Medford
The closest T to New England Law would be the Orange Line. Still, it's a good hike to the T. There isn't a stop right at that school. In your price range it would be challenging to find a place with parking included in the city of Boston. You might do better to try the suburbs that are on the T. Of course the easiest commute on the T is when you don't have to switch lines. My vote would be for Oak Grove at the end of the north side of the Orange Line. You always get a seat on the train no matter what time you're commuting and there are affordable options in that area. There is a really nice new complex that's a 5 minute walk to Oak Grove T station, but it's kind of pricey.
OAK GROVE VILLAGE - Boston's newest apartment community on the MBTA Orange Line in Melrose. However, there are plenty of other options for less money. I'd definetely look on boston craigslist and search for Oak Grove. It's not the name of a town, it's more of a section of Malden and the T station is called Oak Grove too. Here's is an example listed now of a pet-friendly place under $1500 on craigslist: newly renovated, great location. GOOD LUCK!

It's quite close. Chinatown and NE Medical stops are about 2 blocks from the school. The Boylston and Arlington stops on the Green Line are also within a couple of blocks, though it will be harder to find suitable housing along the Green Line.

The best places to go are either Cambridge or Malden. Iv'e lived in both places for long periods and they're the safes best educated and cleanest places you'll find close to the city. You'll have to look around but if your persistent you'll find something good.

Hey Winchester is like 1 or 2 towns over from Cambridge-Malden and in my opinion much nicer and cleaner. No offense, Winchester by far has one of the best school systems in town. I might also suggest Medford-Arlington-Stoneham-Wakefield

If you don't mind commuter rail only.
Salem-Beverly

My daughter is going to be doing a residency at Beth Israel Hospital starting in July. She will be a single mom the end of October, so she needs a safe place she can afford near the hospital. Is Jamaiica Plains OK. I know Brookline is nice but pricey.

Like any neighborhood, there are some nice areas of JP and some not-so-nice.
I live in JP and love it. There are some really nice areas near the Stony Brook T stop. I'm actually considering that area to purchase a home. Of course anything pond side is going to be nice (but pricey).
I think the streets opposite the Forest Hills T are nice (Tower St. & Woodlawn St.).
I have friends who live off South Street and really like it too. The Arboretum side -- between Arborway/Jamaicaway and Centre Street is quite nice - St. Rose St. and Jamaica St. (a little crowded, but great sense of community). Also have friends on the opposite side of Centre - McBride St, Hall St, and Boynton Streets -- Area between Green Street T and Centre St. -- they really enjoy living there.
Hope this helps.
