Default Sailing : Volvo Ocean Race at Fan Pier Boston

As you may know, the Volvo Ocean Race (formerly Whitbread) is gonna do a stopover in Fan Pier, with an In Port Race held on Sat May 9th.
Volvo Ocean Race at Fan Pier Boston
Are you guys gonna show up there?
I'm planning on coming in Boston from Chicago during this weekend to attend this event with a couple of friends. We were wondering if there's a way to see it from the ocean, instead of staying in the port. As we missed the oportunity of volunteering on board, I'm asking if someone here knows about anything sailing that would allow us on board! I checked online and couldn't find anything organized for this special occasion!
If you also know about a cheap hotel for 3 folks just asking a clean small place to sleep (just a little! we mainly want to enjoy Boston and his race), please let me know!
Thanks for your help
See you there
olivia

Nothing is cheap in Boston, but every now and then you can find a reasonable price. Try the Holiday Inn express on Blossom St or the Midtown Hotel.

In you will spend a little more, there are several highrise hotels Overlooking Fan Pier. You might enjoy your races from there. There's no telling how congenial the sea breeze will be on May 9th.

Thank you Bostonian! I checked out these hotels online and I think that the Midtown Hotel looks like what we need and is more in our price range than the ones around the port...
I can't wait to feel this sea breeze there, I'm sure it will be congenial, but..... did you mean that we should think of sleeping outside around the port ?! This would be the cheap choice! We'll think of it!

Google piers park sailing I believe they are offering sailboat rides to see the race sailboats. They are a community boat club with mostly 23' sonars. Nice group of folks.

Actually I was more thinking of the possibility of the weather being 59 degrees in the city, 49 at ocean front with the "sea breeze" making it feel like 29 ...

Wishing the best for you though - maybe it will be 70!

I saw the PUMA CITY thing being built (more like put together). Honestly, I wish it would stay in that location (it's only temporary). It's better than the desolate waterfront that exists now. It has potential to be a world class waterfront with Seaport BLVD being the centerpiece. Sure, it's taken some steps in the right direction... the ICA, the current progress at Fan Pier, and there are projects that will help like Seaport Square, and some developments near Anthony's Pier 4; but right now, it's a vacant wasteland of sprawling parking lots.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for progress down there, and I know we'll see it. But I hate the idea that some people's first exposure to Boston (via this race) will be of the South Boston Waterfront... it's a terrible first impression.

Sigrid, the Midtown is affordable and conveniently located. It DOES, however, look and feel like a bad motel. I sure hope you enjoy your stay in Boston, but please see the rest of the city and don't be mislead by the seemingly undeveloped South Boston Waterfront and your hotel. Take a walk around the area. You have the beautiful Christian Science Plaza directly across from your hotel. A few miles away you have the beautiful Museum of Fine Arts. If you walk a few blocks North of your hotel, you'll have all of Back Bay, including Newbury Street. I sure hope you don't get the wrong impression of Boston. Enjoy!
