Lots of places have lower prices at lunch for the same menu items served at dinner. I think every Indian restaurant in existence has mid-day buffets for as low as $5.99, but - depending on the place - what you might end up with is variations on the theme of "leftover surprise." A couple of my favorite eating places (Legal Seafoods and Chef Chang's House - the latter in Brookline on Beacon St at the Boston border - carry their lunch deals on Saturdays too.)
Get to Sports Depot in Allston between 4 and 6 PM on weekdays, and you can chow down on your choice of a long list of filling appetizers for 99 cents apiece. The purchase of two beers is required, but that's never been a problem for me! Grendel's Den, situated facing the small park at JFK and Winthrop St's near Harvard Square, offers half price on their eclectic menu items during early evenings. "Early bird specials" are dismissed as being for elderly people who are asleep by sundown, but so what? There's nothing wrong with tucking into a delicious dinner for less money.

I love the lunch deals at Marliave ( MARLIAVE : Restaurant : Cocktails : Dining - 10 Bosworth Street, Boston, Massachusetts 02113 ). It's excellent food at reasonable prices. If you head in for lunch, try the Pastrami sandwich. IMHO, it's some of the best pastrami I've had outside of New York City. The clam chowder is excellent as well. It's not traditional in that it's a shallow bowl with two GIANT little necks still in the shell sitting in a shallow broth with potatos surrounding them. When it's served to you, the server pours a little bit of the smokey/bacony grave over the clams and it mixes with the gravy. It's to die for and a GREAT value as far as prices go. Marliave is right near the Boston Common and not far at all from Downtown Crossing, Government Center, etc. It's adjacent to the new condo tower, 45 Province St. Check it out.
