Default When to start looking for apartments in LMA

I'm looking to move in around Aug 16th to a place as close as possible to the Longwood Medical Area (will be a student), and was wondering how far in advance I should look for apartments. I've heard I should look many months in advance because of the large influx of students to the several colleges in the area, though a check on craigslist now and most of the vacancies are for May or June..
