Hello,

I am moving from Boston to Philadelphia, PA this week. I will be driving a 14ft Uhaul rental truck for my move.

I was looking for suggestions on any routes I should take, avoid (I have attached the google directions that I plan to use below).

I am moving on a weekday, plan to leave Boston mid day.

Also, I was looking for any suggestions on SAFE rest stops to park my truck, places to stop to eat, take a break and any other safety/driving tips that you may have.

Thank You

Raju

Hi,

Is the I-95S route longer?

I was told that it is better to take the Tappanzee brigde as opposed to going through one of the NY City bridges?

Thanks,
Raju

Shortest route is Mass Pike to I-84 to I-91 to I-95, over the Geo Washington Bridge, then N. J. Turnpike south to the Phila area. Tappan Zee to G. S. Parkway to N. J. Turnpike is a slightly longer route in miles but well worth it to save an hour or two of bumper-to-bumper traffic on I-95 in the Bronx.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I don't think I can drive the U-haul 14ft rental truck on the GS parkway?

Thanks,
Raju

You're probably right about the GSP. Instead you can continue on I-87 from the Tappan Zee Br a few more miles west to State route 17 south, which takes you down into the Hackensack Meadowlands area where you can pick up the NJTP.

I would use a different route to get into Philly. Take the Walt Whitman instead of the Ben Franklin Bridge. To do this, stay on I-95 longer until you hit Route 168. It will take you to I-295 and I-76 west over the WW bridge. As you approach UPenn, you want to take the Grays Ferry exit which will put you on 34th north. This will wind a bit and turn into 38th St. Voila. I've done the drive dozens of times. It's a bit longer but much easier and faster, letting you avoid Center City. Traveling from or to the north of Philly can be a bit screwy since I-95 was never continued along Route 1 north of Trenton as originally planned.

Thumbs up Boston to Philly

I would suggest leaving a bit early like 9-10am to avoid getting in right in the middle of rush hour in NYC area. if you leave at 12pm you'll be getting into NYC right at the peak of RUsh hour - (NOT GOOD)

leave at 8am-9am if possible.

A route I might suggest would be :

Mass Pike W
to 84 through hartford
at Hartford go 84 West toward Danbury CT
at Brewster/Sodom take 684 South
At Katonah/Bedford Hills take the SAW MILL RIVER PKWY South
At exit 29 on the SAW MILL (go L onto 117S-Manville Rd.)
Take 117 S which becomes Bedford Rd.
You'll cross the Peekskill PKWY/TACONIC PKWY/BARCLIFF PKWY
and then veer L at the fork onto 448 South (Bedford Rd.)
Follow 448 S/bedford rd.
which will merge onto Route 9 South (N Broadway) which becomes (S.Broadway)

Hope this helps
From there go down 9 to the merge onto 287 W for the TAPPEN -Z- BRIDGE
Cross Tappen -Z-bridge
take 287 to Suffren
turn south on 287 down to Oakland
exit off at 202/206 S at Bridgewater/Rantan/Somerville NJ
Just past the shopping center on your R
take a L onto 206 South
Follow 206 South to Princeton Univ. and continue to 95 around Trenton NJ
go on 95 S into Pennsylvania all the way to Vine St. Expressway to UPENN
(follow along on Google Maps)

Default help

My husband and I are trying to plan a trip that includes Boston and Philadelphia. Can someone give me the best route and are there any attractions worth stopping to see along that route? Thanks!
