We are thinking about buying in the Winter Hill area - specifically the Broadway and Main St. We get a lot of mixed opinions as far as the safety issue is concerned. Does anyone have any problem with the safety/drug/gang activities in the area? Is the Mystic River Mystic View housing a concern? Is it safe for me to take the bus from Downtown back to Winter Hill?
We are considering putting an offer in on a condo in that neighborhood and I hope to get some honest opinions from those who has experience in the area.

I really appreciate all feedbacks as always. I've gotten very good information from this forum! Thank you!

My brother lived there for about 10 years with no problems. Barrack Obama lived there when he went to Harvard (on Broadway).

Whitey Bulger was part of the Winter Hill gang there in the 1950's. I think that's where the gang reputation originated. Things have changed quite a bit since then.

The area is not fabulous, but it's mostly students. I'd say the biggest issue there is it's not really convenient to the T. Closest stop is on the orange line i think. Not sure which stop though.

I think the gang activities I have been reading are mainly near to the East Somerville area (MS-13??) and since Winter Hill is right next to it, I have that concern. Both my husband and I work at different schedules and I want to be comfortable enough to take the bus home (there is a bus stop about 500 ft frm the house that we are looking at).

I lived in Ball Square and drove through Winter Hill to get to shopping, Charlestown, 1 way into Boston, etc. I think the most important thing is to walk the area about 4 times, once during a weekday, weeknight, weekend day and weekend night. Now that it's getting warmer out more and more people will be on their stoops, walking around, etc. If you feel comfortable each time, you should be okay. If anything gives you the "heebie jeebies" I would suggest looking elsewhere. Hope that helps!

I am from Ireland and lived on Winter Hill for 7 months.I found the area very safe, day and night. There is a large star market nearby, restaraunts, shops and bars a great park and a regular bus service down broadway to Sullivan square T station which is on the orange line. This will bring you into the city centre.

Why not look at a safe town like Arlington ? Same easy access to Boston, almost no crime. Prices are not that much more.
