Well it was in Atlanta that I first heard someone use the word "jew" as a verb.

Believe me, this type of behavior and racial tension takes place in MANY more areas besides GA.

I agree "miu", no one should use the word, ever, under any circumstance. the topic was referring to racism against blacks, or vice versa. no, the music doesn't help, but it really doesn't change the fact that whites call black people that on a constant basis, I guess until the end of time. same with other comments against jews, hispanics, etc.

From there, their close buddies of other races are also allowed to use the secret club word. Eventually, it is once again used by everyone. If blacks don't like the "n" word, then they must stop using it themselves. Everyone knows the "n" and it's never going away, not until the AA stop using it themselves.
Otherwise, the "n" word is only a word, like f*ck. And if the blacks stop overreacting to hearing it, it will lose its appeal and power.

I was listening to NPR's coverage of the Supreme Court's ruling on the use of foul language on tv. And one word that kept coming up was "context". And I feel that that these days when I have heard racial slurs in MA, I honestly don't think that the user is using it with as much hate and demeaning attitude as when they originally were coined. The same goes for the words like b*tch and wh*re, I just don't feel that they are used in their original and literal context. If one is mad at a person, one just calls them the worst name possible. And the "n" word is just one of them. But these days, no one is actually visualizing black people slaving away in the fields when they say the "n" word. If a guy is mad at women, then he uses the "b" or "w" words... or if the woman is sort of tough, he might even call her a dyke. And if someone gets mad at some Asian, they bring up yellow skin, slanted eyes or whatever. There are bad slurs for every group of people that you can think of. And when someone is pissed at a black person, the "n" word comes to mind. But all of this comes in situations of anger or frustration. When one is mad, the ugly insults fly, it's just human nature and our current culture that is also more promiscuous and desensitized to other words like f*ck and other foul language that wouldn't have been acceptable in polite society a hundred years ago.
BTW I don't care for the use of "n" word at all in any context, especially listening to it in rap music. That should really stop. And that's why I feel that blacks/black rap artists are abusing and using the word much more than non-blacks these days. Enough with the shock value music.

"miu"- while I agree that using those words, "n", "w", "b", etc are commonly used in anger, but I happened to be driving in MA a few years ago, I accidentally must have cut off another driver, unbeknownst to me. I don't make any kind of habit cutting off drivers! I also happen to be black, so of course the other driver, a white female, screamed "n" at the top of her lungs at me. I do what I always do when I have been called this, which is to ignore her (and hope she got into a terrible accicent later!) (no, only joking!!!)
So, if I were white, she would have called me a "b" or equivalent, rather than use an obvious racial slur once she saw me. there are lots of words to choose from in anger to call someone, IMO- it brings out a different element in the person if the one they choose immediately is a racial slur. I don't think it's accurate to say these words are chosen to replace others in any kind of context-original or literal. To use these words reflects racism in the person, IMO. I mean anyone can be a "b" at any moment, it doesn't matter what color they are.
Of course, this is all IMO!!

The voters of Boston and all of MA voted in a black governor 1.5 years ago and now we have voted in a black president.
Time to let this stupid thread die. You can say all you want that
"the dialogue is not over" but
1) This is not a dialogue.
2) You can't have it both ways.

Well the time I was called a g**k, was due to another driver being pissed at my boyfriend who was driving. Our windows were rolled up, and I started to roll mine down, just in time to hear "... and your g**k girlfriend!". And he and his girlfriend were pure white trash as they flicked their cigarette butts out of their windows. I really wanted to jump out of our car, pick up the butts (that were still lit) and toss them back into their car. lol! Plus the other guy was a very poor driver and had stopped at the red light in the middle of two lanes. Then the time I was called a ***, it was because I was driving and went around an SUV straddling the lanes.
When my boyfriend gets pissed in traffic, he will call a woman driver a filthy wh*re. Immediately I will argue with him why even though she's a really bad, sloppy and inconsiderate driver, she's not a wh*re and probably not even filthy. He calls the male drivers he's made at c*cksuckers.
And yes, I have been called the "b" word too. And the "c" word by another woman. All very ugly words, but when people are pissed, that's just what they use while they vent.
Anyway, it would really help the situation if blacks would never use the "n" word at all and give the black users the same negativity as they do non-black people using it. Enough of the double standards already.
