I don't even think you need a roommate if you don't have debt and you're a good budgeter. I know people who live by themselves on far less. I'm about to do it myself and I definitely make less than $45K.

Default Davis Square

Try the Medford area near Davis Square or Davis Square part of Cambridge
good atmosphere, close to public transit, etc.

Just coming over from the NYC forum to see what's going on in my home state. The threads over there usually read "Manhattan on $100K?" to which people always have mixed replies, so this concept of anywhere on 45k a year is just brilliant. I'm sure you can make it work.

Default On grad student wages????

Is it a stretch and possible if all you do is study, sleep and not eat at all?? $26K before taxes, about $18.6 after taxes, $15K to rent, extended insurance = $1650, MTBA will eat up the rest.

My income is about $40k and I rented in Cambridge for $1200/month. Even while being very conservative with my expenses I was losing a small amount of money each month, due in part to my need to pay off previous debts and having my car repeatedly towed. With a roommate, my rent shrank to $725; with a bicycle (I ride whenever its above freezing and not raining) I've saved several hundred dollars on transit; shopping at market basket has also reaped big savings, as has learning the street-cleaning schemes and setting reminders for myself. With these elements in place, Cambridge is still expensive though very livable on my income, as long as I accept a low rate of savings.

I'd go on craigslist and look for room shares, or if that apartment is a 2 bedroom than make one yourself.

I like to use this site to calculate taxes, it does a lot of different states/cities so you can see how far it would go. Also, start a budget now, and see how much of your weekly paycheck you can spend on non essentials
