I'm actually leaving Boston in August. Every section of Boston has good and bad areas. This includes Dorchester. I live in Roslindale, near the orange line. I have never had a break in, or any problems. JP is also nice, and is a 20 minute walk for me. I live near the Arboretum--which is ideal if you have dog(s). Boston is expensive, but these are the areas I know about.

Moving to Boston end of August from Minneapolis. Will be attending Boston College. Would you suggest renting a vehicle to move my stuff or will I be able to find reasonably priced furniture, i.e. bed/mattress; dresser; etc. I can't decide if it is more economical to bring everything I think I need or buy once I get there.

leave it behind. it's not worth the price of a rental and the cost of gas to drag over this stuff, unless they're priceless antiques or hold extreme sentimental value. there are plenty of discount furniture in Allston that sell cheap mattresses and other stuff (though it may not be Jordan Furniture quality). there's also Craigslist, though I'd suggest not buying any used upholstered items or beds (the Allston area has a bit of a bedbug problem last I heard)
