Yeah, there probably are people who deliberately try to change their accents to fit in when they move to a new place, but most probably gradually pick up some of the sounds they hear spoken around them all the time, pretty much unconsciously. I lived in Ohio for a number of years, and in western MA in Amherst, where the accent sounds kind of Midwestern, and I know I've got some Midwestern features mixed in with my mild Boston accent, not by design, but just by kind of absorbing it over time.
