A few days ago, the new S&S on American Legion Highway in Roslindale opened and I went to check it out. The store was clean and decent but the seafood counter and florist department, which the old store had were noticeably absent from the new store. I hope these features are somehow restored.

I am surprised and a little disappointed that the company did not build a superstore in such a spacious shopping center, at least one as big as the Morrissey Blvd. store in Dorchester. Don't get me wrong, I am sick and tired of the S&S Company fighting tooth and nail with local communities (especially out in the suburbs) to built mammoth superstores, which they have too many of already. Yet I felt this was somewhat of a missed opportunity here. A store like this one would rather fit perfectly in Hyde Park where there is no space to expand into a superstore.

I am also surprised by the relative lack of publicity surrounding the opening of this store. When the new South Bay Center store opened a few years back, the newspapers were quick to report it and tout it as an example of urban revitalization. Even Mayor Menino commented on it as well. Not so this time with the Roslindale store. Even the company reps. present at the grand opening were at best lukewarm. Weird isn't it?

Lots going on in the company. Many corporate jobs are being relocated to Pennsylvania from Quincy and recently retired CEO passed away last week at 63 years old.

Many stores no longer have the florist and fish counter. They phased them out according to sales.

Maybe the purchasing power of the surrounding zip codes can't afford fresh fish or flowers.

S&S in N. Quincy still has a small floral area, but got rid of the Boston Market nestled inside. Too bad, as I love their mashed potatoes.

I somehow saw an ad or notice, in the paper perhaps, about the new store.

What was there before? Was it a complete teardown/rebuild?

Previously there was a Bradlees department store at that site. It sat vacant since 2001 when Bradlees went under and was a perpetual eyesore until Stop and Shop tore down the old building and built their new store on the site. The old dilapidated Stop and Shop still stands next to the new store and its shelves are being emptied out.

Well it's certainly about time. I knew when I was back In Boston last June there was a hell of a lot of construction through there. That old S&S was a dump for years. I remember as a kid when the old Bradlees was there and it was a dump there too. I may check it out when I go back home this year.
