My grad school room mate and I are seriously considering the Boston area to start our careers. We just need advice on which neighborhoods are best - cool, professional, young. Some areas where we'd feel comfortable.

Default Davis Square

You might look into the central square or davis square/Harvard Square area of Cambridge and Somerville

South Boston ("Southie") is almost a no-brainer response...there's been an "infestation" of yuppies and young folks in recent years. Lots of Southie yuppies flock to Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall Marketplace bars on weekends (no, not just for tourists, despite what many claim, at least not at night). Atlantic Beer Garden's patio in warmer months, in the Seaport area, seems to be a magnet for them; it's a $8-$10+ cab ride or a somewhat easy subway/bus ride to these spots. You won't need or want a car in Southie.

Parts of the Charlestown neighborhood (esp. the Navy Yard rentals and condos) are appealing to your demographic. Of course, Beacon Hill, South End, Fenway, North End and now parts of East Boston ("Eastie") are hotspots. Allston or Brighton are further out, but good choices for you also, in most pockets.

The town of Brookline would appeal to you (yes, expensive, but so are the others mentioned).

Parts of Dorchester have become more of an option, as the last poster stated. Although further out in many cases, they'd be a bit more affordable. Just avoid the bad sections of this, the largesst Bos neighborhood. Ask for specifics on "Dot" later, if still interested, or do a search on this forum,

Parts of Jamaica Plain ("JP") are hip with cool shops and restaurants, some nice Victorians, and near the pond and Arboretum in some cases. But a killing at a convenience store on Centre St. yesterday. Despite the kinda hip vibe of the people in JP and in some of its areas, I prefer a simpler and basic life in Quincy the past 5+ years. If I were younger, maybe I'd feel otherwise.

Wellington Circle in Medford, on the orange line, is now an option with its Station Landing complex of condos and apts. A Boston Sports Club, Pizzeria Regina (yum!), sushi and Walgreens are on the premisis. Newer construction with skyline views, on a park/Mystic River setting across the street. It may seem far but it connects to Somerville, which is usually mentioned in these topics. So why not this part of overlooked Medford, Mass.?
