Roslindale, That is within 128/95. There is only 3-4 stops before South Station/BackBay (less than 10 miles from Boston; 15 minutes on train). I just checked the schedule. The do not even offer Sunday service because it is so close. If you are talking about "T" as in subway, then I agree the schedule is much better.
From Framingham, it takes about 45 minutes. However, on Saturday, it runs every 2 hours and worst on Sundays.
I now understand why people move to Quincy and Braintree. It does have convenience of the RED line going to Boston.
As to commuting from Plymouth. I think it is crazy especially a few years ago when the Big Dig was in full force. I hear you about the traffic. Now part of the Big Dig is shutdown again since part of the ceiling fall down and killed a woman. It backs up all the traffic from Rt90 since they cannot go the airport the easy way. (via Ted Williams tunnel). It is estimated the repair is already another $20 million. Every men, women and child in MA has to pay another $3-5 for the repair. We already paid $1500 per person for the big dig. Oh well. The repair is just a beginning of a long list of maintenance bill. Better get the checkbook out.

the T
From Roslindale the commute by the T was 45 to 60min. First you need to get the bus to forest hills, then the train to summer street Boston. It was around 8 or 9 stops. This area was near rt 128, and I think rt 9 chestnut hill area. The bus made alot of stops also.

From your description consider Wellesley too. You should be able to get an apartment for what you want to pay, cultural diversity, College town, and easy commute to Boston on train or car.

Try Marblehead also. The town is beautiful and is conveniently located on the water There is a bus to Boston as well as the commuter rail from Swampscott two minutes away which only takes 26 minutes (I've timed it) to get to North Station.

I would agree with looking to rent in Wellesley. It's a pristine town with expensive housing, but you should be able to rent a something there. I wouldn't consider it 'artsy', but it is beautiful & has a commuter rail
Waltham is another good alternative. I think it is a great place to look for investing in the area, if you are thinking about buying. Moody Street has some great restaurants, there are artists studios (they hold gallery tours a couple times a year) and Boston University has a gallery there. It just seems like more & more people are investing in this area.
I would look in Jamaica Plain if you want to find a nice ecclectic mix of people w/ lot's of artists & studios. There is a beautiful pond & boathouse, easy access to shopping, you are close to several excellent hospitals
