Thank you NY'er, and thanks for the tips. We would definitely like to try out some kayaking as another outdoor activity. I'm also thrilled about being close to the ski areas in New England. I grew up in Sweden and I used to go skiing a lot, but now I've lived in the midwest over the last few years and almost everything is flat like a pancake!

My sister-in-law goes to school in NYC, so I'm sure we'll be travelling down there quite often. We kind of like the slower pace of Boston though, I'm sure it won't be that slow. As far as Newton, with my wife working from home it's great that it's quiet and not too much going on, I'll be sure to catch some of the student activity while down towards BU, even though I'm sure grad school will keep me quite busy!

Rocket2K is on a distinguished road
Moving to Boston area from NYC (last 15 years in the city) with two elementary school age kids. Where to live: Brookline or Newton Centre - or someplace else? Want to make use of T line with short walk to the train. May not be ready for suburban culture shock! Any recommendations?

For a great activity, try kayaking near the Marriott in Auburndale- they have rentals there.

Good luck and welcome.

Brookline is a great suburban compromise because it is actually suburban like Park Slope. Good schools, T services, minutes from Downtown. Netwton is next burb out, about the same only less so.
