I live at the border of back bay/ south end. I will be working in Mattapan (walk hill street). Many have warned me that the neighborhoods I will be passing through are not very good. I am planning on driving and would appreciate it if you advise me on any particular streets I should avoid. Looks like Tremont-Washington-Hyde Park OR Blue Hill Ave. would both take me there. Any ideas which is safest? Also, How's the T situation in that area? safe?

The route you've outlined is a good choice, and definitely safe. The closest T station is Forest Hills. You can walk to the JP end of Walk Hill, but from there, it would be a lot further to reach Mattapan. For public transit, you'd probably want either the 28 bus out of Jackson Square which goes down Blue Hill to Mattapan Square, or take the Needham line to Roslindale Square, and the 30 bus from there which goes down Cummins Highway to Mattapan Square. I have never felt unsafe on either bus line. However, the bus depot at Jackson Square can feel a bit unsafe.

Thanks! Do you know how's the winter commute in this route if I want to drive? I am new to Boston!

Aside from trying to drive it during a snow storm, it should be fine. The streets you'd be on are wide and among the first/best plowed.
