Default Opinions on Maverick area of East Boston?

My husband and I are considering renting in the Maverick area of East Boston, as he needs to work at the airport and I need to be downtown/back bay. Any opinions on this area...is it safe for a woman on her own at night? Are there any parks or restaurants in the area? thanks.

I live about 12 miles from Maverick Square. It is a mostly hispanic community. Quite a few of spanish restaurants and italian. Public transportation right there and next to the airport.
As for safety I would not feel comfortable walking alone at night. It is considered a desirable locale because of where it is but it still has a lot of cleaning up to do.
If being real close to work is a priority then it is a good choice.

Default Winthrop might be a bit nicer

East Boston is not a nice place to live - it is jammed with traffic and noise. It is convenient to the airport, but these days, it's pretty easy to get to the airport via the new tunnel from many other locations. There are lots of other places to live that will have a higher quality of life.

Have you visited East Boston? Maybe you should spend a few minutes there before you decide.

Another consideration is wether you will be using public transportation or not?
There are better parts of East Boston and also neighboring is Chelsea another inner city. Both are great as far as public transportation if that is important to you, also Revere is close to transportation. Winthrop is cute but not as accessible to the T line directly. I live in Saugus and that is also a consideration but the T is not as easily accessible in all areas.
If Driving you would have many other nearby options as the previous message told you.

The East Boston Piers Park is right off Maverick Square. It's a beautiful park partly on land and partly on a pier, so lots of borrowed landscape from the harbor. Lovely spot. The Jeffries Point section just south of Maverick Square has had gentrifiers for 30 years so as middle class people from elsewhere you might be quite comfortable there. There's no "scene" in East Boston, however: strictly working class ambience, but it should be safe for a woman walking home at night. But as others have said, check it out first. Your husband can walk to the airport from Jeffries Point.

East Boston is coming along, but I wouldn't recommend living in Maverick. Look into the Jefferies Point or Orient Heights sections of East Boston.

IMO, Maverick has too many low-income public housing units. They tried mixing in some market-rate residences, but you know how it is w/the 'projects.' Most are just trying to make an honest living, but there are always a few bad apples to ruin it for everyone.

Unhappy Don't Move to Maverick

Hello. I live in East Boston and am desperate to move away. I wrote a long paragraph about living in East Boston near the Orient Heights stop but didn't mention Maverick. It's an awful place. Terribly crowded and densely populated, buildings falling apart. It's poor, mostly Hispanic. There's a small park near Shaw's where I've seen hookers, drug addicts and drunks hanging out in the day. You don't want to move to Maverick. I'm looking to move and do not know where to go. Best of luck.
