How in the world do CU-Boulder students afford to live in Boulder? The area is so expensive! Does anyone have any suggestions as to the surrounding areas? I am 31 (not looking for a popular place for CU-Boulder students). How bad is the commute from Broomfield? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Broomfield would not be that bad.

A lot of them share houses or apartments; a few have the parents buy them a condo for 3 years. If you drove from Broomfield it shouldn't take more than about 20 minutes - depending on traffic and weather of course.

I think most CU students live in Boulder. There are some affordable apts in town, especially if you share with a roomie.

I lived in Longmont for my first year in grad school.

Not a bad commute at all! About 30-40 minutes. And I really liked the town-good place if your older and/or have a family.

If you're looking to party, maybe not so much.
