Default Yet another person looking to move to CO, specifically Boulder

Hello all,

Just a bit of an introduction. I am currently a senior at UGA in Athens, GA looking to possibly move out to CO. I will be graduating here in about two weeks with plans to head to Atlanta to work (where Ive lived my entire life), but I seriously have been considering moving to the Boulder/Denver area. I visited Denver/Boulder/CO Springs about 5 years ago and fell in love with CO (so much so I wanted to go to CU Boulder, but too much $$$). All of my friends and family are pretty much here in Georgia, so I would really be going out on a limb moving out to Colorado...but how many opportunities does one really get, right?

Anyways, after reading a few other threads Ive still got some questions of my own.

1. First and foremost, Ive got to find a job. Ive done some browsing, but nothing major. Im curious as to some of the bigger companies that are located in Boulder. I saw IBM, Google, a few others, but what other companies are legit there? I applied for a position at the University, but still looking for more.

2. I know its a college town, and I still love to drink/have a good time, but as a 23 year old male exiting "the biggest party school", im not really looking to live the crazy college life anymore (as I shouldnt anyways). Is it easy to find girls to have fun with that arent necessarily college students? Ive read a few threads of people saying how unfriendly some girls act there.

3. How bad is the drive from Boulder to Denver? If I happened to find a job in Denver, would it suck to drive from Boulder to Denver everyday (remember, Im coming from ATL traffic, so im used to it)?

4. Seems like it would be fairly easy to find a roommate if I moved there, but the housing looks pretty expensive. AmIRight??

5. Im born and raised in GA. It doesnt take a genius to realize it would be quite different there, whether it be politically, socially, climate, etc. Politically I might be in minority, but that really doesnt deter me at all. Im a pretty easy going person that gets a long with most all types of people. Would I be out of my element moving there?

I know it seems like there are a million of these "looking to move to CO" threads, but I am looking for some answers that are maybe a little more catered towards my situation. Any help would be apprecaited

Hi. I'm 25 and have lived in Colorado all my life (just moved away yesterday), including Boulder for three years. I can help on a few of these questions.
1) Not sure what type of career you are looking into, but there's also Lockheed Martin, Coors , all sorts of federal government facilities in Boulder (NCAR, NASA, etc), Celestial Seasonings tea...
2) There are attractive women everywhere, everywhere in Boulder, but as far as the ratio goes between seeing good looking women and dating/hooking with them, it's very very low. Not just speaking from personal experience, but also pretty much every guy I knew there. Not that I run with a group of Cassanovas... Young people seem to be more academics and socializing than relationships.
3)That drive on Hwy 36 sucks at rush hour. 30 miles takes two hours. But maybe that's not bad coming from Atlanta. If you can avoid rush hour, it's not bad.
4) Housing gets cheaper the further away from the mountains and from campus that you go.
5) Boulder has a huge reputation as a liberal haven, but in general, it's just a bunch of more or less progressive people, with a 15% mix of political fringe people thrown in. It's a welcoming place though. Although the frat guys and rich kids and yuppies do start to wear down your spirit, Boulder is a good place.

I agree with what steve said. I will say, the Boulder google office is not large, ~100 people. There are many companies of the same size or larger in Boulder. It would help to know what kind of work you are looking for.

You'll do fine on all accounts. I am not a CO native (CA) BUT I attended CU, lived in Atlanta after graduation for three years (yes, familiar with UGA/Athens, etc.) and after San Francisco, ended up back here for good, 8 years now. You'll like it, you'll fit in well, find a good scene, meet people and even though rent can be pricey, it's easy enough to find a roommate.

The only thing that isn't quite right are the companies you mentioned. Yes, IBM has a large presence but you don't see them posting jobs a lot. Google here is SMALL and not even worth mentioning in contrast the the size of their other offices. Boulder companies actually post on Craigslist for jobs, more so than other cities.

If you use Indeed for the rest of your search you should cover off on most postings. You can Google the biggest, "best" and headquartered Boulder and surrounding area companies to help, there are plenty lists. Good luck. You'll like it here.
