The new 2012 Impreza gets 36MPG on the highway, best for an AWD sedan. I would consider this if you want to keep the cost around $20k for a nicely equipped NEW small sedan.

If you want something more fun, check out a new 2011+ WRX. Nicely equipped for about $27k with premium package (sunroof, heated seats, etc) but only available with 5 speed manual. The turbo will give you great performance at altitude. Nice car that will rip 0-60mph in under 5 seconds!

If you want a larger car, check out the Legacy and Outback. Equipped with the CVT transmission, these guys can get 30MPG. Not shabby! But the 170HP is slow slow, especially when you consider you're losing between 15-20% HP in Boulder/Denver and it it only gets worse if you go in the mountains (lose 3% for every 1,000'). Turbos only lose about 3-5% in this elevation since they can compensate for the lack of air.
Thank you! I just read your post to my husband. So helpful!! Thanks Katiana too. I appreciate all the help.

Jeeps are poorly made, and unless they've changed recently, avoid them. I also recommend buying used through CarMax, which gets you much more for your money, and still gets you a warranty from a national business.

Gotta disagree w/you qfrost! It depends on the model. We've driven Jeep Grand Cherokees since 1992 and we have always kept them for 7 years minimum (mine is 8 now). We've had very few problems and any we had were minor.

We have a '97 Jeep Wrangler that we've only done regular maintenance on. Handed it down to our son when he turned 16 - he loves that vehicle! So easy to work on himself. He loves modifying it and tinkering with it.

Well, I guess mileage may vary - JDPowers gives the 2011 Jeep variations slightly less than average ratings, Consumer Reports rank Jeep low, as an example:

11 worst cars - Consumer Reports - Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (1) - CNNMoney.com
Best & worst cars, top cars and lowest scorers, overall

I've heard anecdotally of unreliability and rattles, but I'll yield the point to those who have direct experience.
