From what I've seen in Boulder you'll fit in fine as a multi-racial family. I haven't been here long (only about 4 months), and it is true that it's predominantly white (coming from New York I notice this a lot) but as I frequent the playgrounds with my own children I have run into many families that would be labeled as 'non traditional' and it really doesn't seem to be an issue here as it can be in other places. There are lots of kids who are adopted from other countries so they are a different race than their parents and I've run into quite a few bi-racial couples, same sex couples with children are also not uncommon. Personally, I don't think there would be any stigma at all. As these children grow up here they community will likely begin to diversify. The philosophy here from what I've seen is very 'live and let live' BTW, I don't live in an area of the city where people have maids so I can't really comment on visiting damien's remarks, although I'm sure that's why we don't get any panhandlers near my house either.

Default How was the transition?

Hey There -

I know this post was almost 10 years ago, but wanted to know if you decided to move to Boulder and if so, how the transition went. My husband and I are also interested in moving from LA and we are an interracial couple with a young boy.

I am also a bit concerned about the lack of diversity in Boulder, especially coming from LA, but there are so many other things that are appealing to us about CO.

Thanks for sharing any updates!

Question Racial Diversity in Boulder

Hi There -

My husband and I are an inter-racial couple thinking about moving to Boulder from Los Angeles. He's white, I'm black and we have a 17 month old son. I realize the lack of diversity will certainly be noticeable after living in LA for 8 years, but there are so many other aspects of Boulder that we find appealing: cost (much lower than LA), air/water quality, skiing/hiking, beautiful landscape, health-conscious people, etc. However, I want to make sure we feel like we fit in and my son is able to identify with both his white and black background.

Anyone have any insight into the racial diversity in Boulder and how a mixed race family will fit in? Has racial diversity increased in the past few years? It the lack of diversity an issue for anyone?

Thanks!

People in Boulder won't have a problem with you, your child, or your relationship. This is a very liberal town.

I think racial diversity in increasing, but it appears that it's mostly in the Asian category.

Have you ever been to Boulder? If not, come on out for a visit and get a feel for things.

Per this posting by the OP, the OP never moved to Boulder, they went to San Diego and may be back in Baltimore by now.

I recently found myself in San Francisco noticing a black/white lesbian couple walking down the street arm in arm. It struck me that I've never seen anything like that in 15 years in Boulder, where there are very few African-Americans. Denver is a whole lot more racially diverse.

People seem to be very open-minded, but there's a big difference between thinking you're open-minded and actually creating a diverse community.
Lived in Boulder, now in Denver. How on Earth do you "create diversity"? This is a serious question, I really want to know. How do you create it if it's not there? Can't there be a huge difference between what the majority of the people want, and what the people who run Boulder want—for instance, letting Google build a campus was not the decision of the people of Boulder.
