The state of Georgia boasts the most species of firefly, and Boone, North Carolina, is the firefly capitol of the U.S. The firefly-richest region of North America probably occurs along a 30-mile-wide swath on the Florida-Georgia border from the Big Bend Coast to the Okefenokee Swamp.
(thanks again to my nephew who helped me research fireflies)

I don't remember any in Illinois. That's not to say there aren't any there.

All summer long in PA I see fireflies. I tried to send that in a reputation comment to you but I accidentally hit return, so my reputation comment to you only said "a".

I grew up in North Georgia, and fireflies are a hallmark of summer. I used to love catching them growing up, and in my grandfather's cow pasture just after twilight there were so many fireflies that it was like looking down into the night sky. I'm going to miss them when I move out to Golden in a few weeks.
