I live in NE Longmont. Outside my front door is a small oval patch of gravel that I would dearly love to plant something in. Any suggestions?

I was thinking of sunflowers which would be colourful and pretty could grow up along the wall or a succulent that would require minimal attention. The area faces due West so has full-on sunshine all afternoon. I have no idea of the quality of the soil but I'm guessing it's heavy and clay-y like most of Longmont. I don't have a naturally green thumb but I can and will water when needed but it will get snowed on so has to be able to withstand our lovely Winter weather.

I'm assuming it's not irrigated? If its not, plant blue flax which is a native short lived perennial with beautiful sky blue flowers. You will need to water occasionally for the first few months so it can establish. Another plant that's great for spots like that here is Agastache, tough nut that one and rabbits won't eat it. Depending on variety flowers summer or fall

No it's not. We have lines laid to other areas but not there.

I will write those down - thanks.

I like the choices that have been suggested, also there's Jupiters Beard (Centranthus ruber) as it will rebloom all summer as long as you keep the dead stalks cut off. Flax is gorgeous but I find it has a shorter bloom time. Whatever you choose be sure to keep them watered frequently until they're settled in. Next year you can water occasionally. Good luck!

Cosmos grow tall (>5' sometimes), bloom continuously once they start to flower until frost, and reseed themselves. They do need some water, but we have some around the mailbox where they are in full southern sun all day and they look great. Have to trim them back for the mailman sometimes.

As a follow-up: the HOA planted a tiny lavender bush. Not sure if it's surviving so far or giving up the ghost but keep your fingers crossed.

You probably won't need to water your plants for awhile!
