So I'm doing some research and wanted to know if people feel safe and feel like airbnb and couch surfing is legit and safe.

I know someone that couch surfs all the time and loves it, but I don't know first hand. Boulder seems like a place that some old hippie type would be down with that. The cheapest motel I could find was about $65 a night. Foot of the Mountain and maybe some other motel. There are also rooms for rent on CL, that might work for you.
