Is anybody familiar with old town Longmont? Do they have good schools in that area and would it be a good neighborhood for children?

What grade level(s) are you looking for?

There are actually two Old Towns or Historic Districts in Longmont: West and East. The Westside is probably better known and a little more scenic. It seems a good area for kids with minimal traffic, lots of quiet side streets lined with trees, a decent sized park at the northern edge. The Eastside is near the railway line altho trains are not that frequent thro town and are freight, not passenger. It's also pretty quiet and quaint but perhaps a little rundown.

THere used to be a lot of cruising down main street on certain nights. I remember getting pulled over by the cops in College ... and stupid me, I was just driving home to Boulder from CSU and got pulled over for having a taillight out.

I really like Longmont although parts of it is rather run down but from what I understand the newly elected Board and Mayor are wanting to deal with the revitalization of some of the older areas.

The schools vary A LOT depending on where you are. You are with St Vrain Valley School District who has some serious financial problems in the past. And although the money issues have been mended and the old Board replaced, there is still a feeling of distrust.

However, Longmont voters are very generous with mill levies and funding. Skyline Highschool is very nice, it's huge but very nice. There are also charter school options, Twins Peak Academy is excellant if you can get your kids in there. They have a terrific gifted and talented program.

By southeast do you mean the southern end of Main Street or around E 3rd Avenue? They have built a new development on Main Street called Prospect New Town which is nice, altho not cheap. There are new condos and houses built in unusual and imaginative designs, plus shops (coffee, deli, wine), hairsalon, couple of fitness studios, etc. You can check it out at prospectnewtown.com. E 3rd Avenue is also a fairly new area with larger shops such as Best Buy, Petco, Marshalls, etc. Further along there is a new housing development called Mill Village which is mostly townhomes with some houses. It's a little ways out of town and if you don't have your own transportation it's difficult to get to the nearest stores. It's also close to Hwy 119 which is a busy 2-lane highway going out to I-25.

Default Checking some other areas in Longmont - any more input?

I am doing my rental shopping from Reno, Nevada so I really appreciate all the info that I've received so far. It makes it easier for me since I'm not real close. I have been to northern part of Colorado a few times, but I don't know which areas are better.

When I referred to southeast Longmont I was referring to an apartment complex on Quail Road across the street from a new recreation center. I am also interested in an apartment complex called the Legacy which is on Nelson and Foothills. It's zoned for Niwot High School. Any info on this area? Also looking at a townhouse on Townly Circle in Central Longmont. Looking at the map it's behind Mountain View Cemetery off of 15th and Cimmeran. This is zoned for Longmont High. Does anyone know antything about these areas and schools? Thanks again for your help!

Niwot High School has a great reputation. It serves mostly a quite wealthy community, Niwot. It has an IB program (International Baccalaureate). It rates Excellent on Colorado's school accountability reports. My friends who have kids who've gone to Niwot have been happy with the school. I know less about Longmont High, but I've heard less uniformly good reports. (Longmont High rates High on the accountability reports.) Here's a link to the school accountability reports. You can search by district and/or school names. School Accountability Report - School Search (http://reportcard.cde.state.co.us/reportcard/CommandHandler.jsp - broken link) Sorry, can't help with information about places to live.

I second Niwot High's good reputation. Can't say they steered me wrong- though it's been years since I graduated. The new IB program is excellent and provided an even better college prep education for my younger sibling than I got with "just" AP classes.
