Default Relocating: Small Towns Near Boulder?

I will be relocating to Colorado to begin graduate studies in Boulder. I'm interested in buying a home (160K-200K) in a neighboring community within 30 miles of Boulder.

I'm a single woman with a dog and am looking for a community that is on the small side (under 3000), safe, and has access to outdoor activities such as hiking. It's important to me to live in a community where people are friendly and considerate.

I'm currently living in a small historic town where the population is comprised mostly of misfits. What is socially unacceptable elsewhere, is socially acceptable here. I want to avoid those type of communities when I relocate.

Which towns should I consider and which ones should I stay away from?

Any thoughts on Nederland, Rollinsville, Lyons, or Jamestown?

Thanks for your help,
Lily

Where are you living now? As a misfit maybe that is the place for me? I'm thinking about Boulder and also want to know about small towns near by. Ned sounds too high and windy.

Unless you have a penchant for mountain living, which I think would be hard for a single woman, I'd recommend Lyons, of the towns you mentioned. You might try Boulder as well. It has many "conventional" people, but also some "misfit" types.

Lyons is way too expensive for the $ range you listed. So are the other towns you mentioned. Small town living in the front range is very pricey! I have friends who bought a one room cabin with no running water in Gold hill for about 350k!!

Maybe you could find something iin Fredrick/Firestone which are still fairly small (but not for long).

They're also still within' distance you mention, although they are not small mountian towns.
