Comedy needs to move some place in a far far galaxy.Born in Iowa I graduated H.S. in Longmont in 1956, got married and moved to Boulder before it was a luxery city, after a period of 30 years I was free to travel and lived in Honolulu, Tucson and back to Longmont. I would still be in Longmont if it were physically possible to take care of my self. I loved Longmont. The people are friendly and caring, the shopping is middle class as is most of the town.

Stay Away From The Trend

My question is . . how's the neighborhood? The Longmont Crime Map shows very little crime East of the park for the past year---some vandalism, but smatterings of more serious issues just West and North and a few South.
The schools? I think the transition is Spangler, Heritage, Skyline. I hear Spangler is very good, Heritage not so much, but Skyline good again?
Would be very interested in hearing opinions . .

I wouldn't live in the trend homes. The houses North of Mt View, and East of Alpine are nice. The market is pretty stagnent from what my friends are telling me. You know, I don't say very nice things about the people who live there, and yet some people in this forum reinforce what I said. Keep it up.
Plus, I don't live in a galaxy far far away, but where I live, its HOT, its Superficial, and I get to float in a pool all day.

We have lived in the SW side of Longmont for the past 2 years. Our kids are just a year older than yours (at 5 and 3). It is a nice area, and the town as a whole is VERY kid friendly. You ought to be able to find something for 300K that is nice, safe, and close to parks and schools.
With regard to schools, knowing that your kids ought to start up shorty after you move here...I must warn you about one in particular on the SW side called Eagle Crest Elementry.
We thought it at first glance to be a nice enough school, so we started our 5 year old in their kindergarten program. After a just one semester, we elected to pull him out for many reasons. We are moving ourselves this summer, and will enroll him elsewhere once we move.
Eagle Crest is extremely overcrowded and borderline out of control. Their teachers however are quite good, with one exception...their special education teacher. She (Mrs Adams) likes to think of herself as good at her trade, but we discovered the hard way that she is anything but.
She exhibits very poor listening skills (especially with regard to parent wishes and concerns), also poor judgment, and has a quick trigger when it comes to labeling kids prematurely. This leads to many kids being pulled from their classrooms, falsely labeled as problem children, and almost downright abused by Mrs Adams herself WITHOUT parent consent.
Our 5 year old boy came into Eagle Crest with an IEP for speach. He quickly lost it, as his speaking improved. Mrs Adams relentlessly tried to then label him from anything from ADHD to Autistic to Emotionally Disturbed just to keep an IEP on him. She insisted we have him checked out for all of these things with our Pediatrician. The doctor did not agree with Mrs Adams's suggestions and determined him to have none of the above. He was simply lacking the maturity (as he just turned 5 in September).
Our Pediatrician even phoned Mrs Adams about this, and Mrs Adams ignored it. Without our consent, she continued to try to label our son until we elected to pull him from that school (avoiding an un-fair and false label that may stay with him for life).
The school psychologist is on the same page with their special education teacher, and together they work relentlessly to weed kids out of the general population and prematurely label and isolate them. Clearly they both view this policy of theirs as their job security. Unless your kid is the perfect little robot, you may want to consider other school options if you end up living near Eagle Crest.
The principle at Eagle Crest is a nice friendly young guy, but avoids conflict and is not proactive enough. Thus the special education system runs on its own without proper checks and balances.
If that wasn't bad enough, Eagle Crest has a VERY bad bulling problem. Their policy towards it seems to be..."for each their own, allowing natural selection to take its course." They do NOTHING to stop the bulling, so it runs rapid. This again can be traced back to the leadership skills of its principle. Bulling is unacceptable behavior in today's school system, and should not be tolerated. It can damage a young kids self esteem which effects can be felt for a lifetime. Unfortunately, not many schools address this serious problem enough...Eagle Crest is a prime example of that.
Thought you'd appreciate my 2 cents on this school for what they are worth to you. Best of luck with your move!

""I wouldn't live in the trend homes. The houses North of Mt View, and East of Alpine are nice.""
All the homes East of Centennial Park are nice or can be made nice. It's still block by block as far as where I would buy a house, though. I'm happy over here . . none of the 45 mph madness of Hover Rd.
The Trend Houses just east of Alpine, because they lie at the top of a small ridge, have some of the best views of the Front Range in the city . . save the far Western side near Airport Rd, Lake McinTosh etc, which lie on the side of a small ridge heading out of town. But those homes are 4-650K, some with golf course views, etc.
