Default Boulder-like cities (elsewhere)

I have heard about Berkeley, CA and Ithaca, NY but what about parallels to say:

1. New Paltz, NY
2. Princeton, NJ
3. Charlottesville, VA
4. Sebastopol, CA

Haven't been to any of those. They are all college towns, I believe.

Default Boulder is actually quite unique....

What about Santa Cruz, CA or Ashland, OR or Bend, OR.

Check out hippy.com for other hipster places.

I second Burlington, VT. I have a friend who lives there and he calls Boulder 'Burlington West'

Boulder and Burlington are two peas in a pod (downtown Burlington's church street and pearl st in Boulder were even designed by the same guy). Heck I once saw the same dread locked hippie "spare changing" in Boulder one month and in Burlington the next.

Austin, is much larger then either town, but also has the "young college town- in a pretty setting- with a lot of culture" vibe. No mountains but lots of lakes and hills. Most folks are surprised at how pretty Austin is. The town also prides itself on the robust music scene.

I've heard Madison rocks and there are any number of places on the west coast and northwest that have similar vibes.
Also heard good things about Athens, GA

Princeton, NJ is nice, but much smaller than Boulder or Madison, or even Burlington--it's only about 10,000 people.

That's a good point. I like Princeton a lot since you can take the train to the campus, eat/dine at the microbrewery, and go cycling on the D&R Canal trails. The nearby New Hope/Lambertville/Lahaska area are decent with the old trains, microbreweries, and scenic cycling.
