If you were trying to hurt my feelings by saying you hunt, you didn't. That's your hobby, you enjoy it and I appreciate you being passionate about something like I am about not killing animals. And to your second question, I have done it before. I am from Buffalo, New York so it would not bother me too much, lol. We have Winter from September until April, too.

WOW, WOW, WOW I just want to thank every person so, so much for all of your input. I wish I could respond to all of them but I have been slacking on getting on the internet the past few days haha. I just want to thank everybody for everything, You have put a lot of logic into what was just a "dream" days ago. I will probably reconsider starting up a commune in Boulder and also reconsider the number of people welcomed into it. Everything everyone has said has made perfect sense. Jazzlover, IDunn, and Darjoh - I especially want to thank you. So, thank you.
I have not been to Boulder - I've only seen in pictures what looks to be perfection. I still want to wind up there someday and I will, hopefully I meet some kind souls like all of you. I guess the BF and I will be moving to VT for 6 weeks during his internship, I'll keep you all updated and let you know how that goes. Thanks again, best of luck to everyone. |

Colorado, I TOTALLY understand why you want to do this. In this fast food society we seem to have lost our "ground". Alot of people don't even know their neighbors and couldn't grow a tomato if someone paid them. It would be amazing to have a sense of community where people tended each other and actually cared and had/made time to do so. Now that I have a small child and my parents are getting older I crave these things more and more. Don't let these naysayers get you down BUT there have been some things said that you should take to heart. Go live on a commune for a summer or a few weeks. You may love it or you may hate it. I am sure it's not all sunshine and flowers. See how these things actually work before you make some huge mistakes or just get some great ideas. Either way, do some homework, preferably on-site. It will pay off in the long run. My dear, keep on keepin' on.

Thanks. The thing is, some years we do the exact same thing we're doing this year, and don't get much of a crop at all. It's very hit or miss here. The roses were just beautiful this spring, better than I have ever seen them in 28 yrs, so I thnk conditions were just "right" this year.

It's a wonderful idea to live on one first - I never even thought about that! Honestly I am glad I didn't think a lot about it before posting this, I had no idea where to start and you guys have given me plenty of options. Thanks! JKMEWRIGHT, thank you for putting yourself in my head for a minute. With your perspective, you are going to raise your child just fine. Hopefully your neighbors want to get to know their neighbors or else you're in trouble.
See, I was raised on a beautiful dead-end street where my parents were (and still are) BEST friends with all of the neighbors. We really were a huge family. I had ten different "mom's and dad's" and over a dozen "sisters and brothers." The family across the street (who also had four kids at the time, like us) moved to Durango, CO, where they still live. That is where my dream of moving there originally started (I was six when they moved, this has been my dream for fourteen years.) Thanks to Facebook/Myspace I was able to reconnect with them and now have a family to stay with when I visit your beautiful state. I just dream of raising my kids in the same way I was raised. In a community where every parent wants to help every other parent and every child has eight best friends, you know? Things have changed. I never want my kids to play with video games or watch TV. That is one of the greatest things about growing up dirt poor. I HAD to play outside at the Weeping Willow Tree with the other neighborhood kids. We HAD to keep up with the veggies in the garden because if not, it was Pork N' Beans and Hot Dogs. I did not have the luxury of TV or gaming systems or computers, I got my first cell phone this year. I am so grateful for never having more nature gave me. |
