Default Advice welcome: relocation & looking for a place to live

Hello,

My husband and I will move to CO shortly. Unfortunately, he will work in downtown Boulder and I will be in Greenwood Village. We are trying to figure out where we should rent the apartment so we both can handle the commute.

I have been doing research on City-Data for a while and the more info. I have, the more confused I become. I'd love to hear what locals recommend and any advice is greatly appreciated.
We are looking for:
1) Safe neiborghood (the town we currently live has 1 sex offender and 0 murder and very very low crime rate)
2) Within 50 min. commute to Boulder and Greenwood Village.
3) Btw, what do you guys think about Links at Legacy Ridge? Is that a good rental community?

Thanks a lot!!

I was just curious how you managed to line up work before the before. Could you elaborate how "you played your cards"?

That is a large "spread" between Boulder and Greenwood Village. My hunch says to look at North Lakewood, Golden, and Arvada as to be almost equi-distant to both work centers.

Hi SpinCycle,

Thanks for the reply. We both move from east coast. My husband got the offer several months before he finished the school and I have to move for him. I just applied some jobs @ Monster and flew to Denver for interviews. It's pretty standard process. I know it's a long way between Boulder and Greenwood Village, but I was told most of large corporations are located in Denver or DTC and I don't want to work for small companies at this point. I am used to 1 hour commute one way, but I just want to have no more than 45 min as I want to enjoy the outdoor life Colorado offers.

I don't know if you can find a place 50 min. from each location. Maybe. Get out the map and look at it. 50 min = probably 30 miles or so. I don't think you really have to worry about safety in most communities. I disagree that "most" large corporations are located in Denver or the DTC. Broomfield and Boulder have a large IT presence (I don't know what kind of work you are in), and there are lots of jobs all over the metro area.

--- I think I am ok with 30 miles. We plan to live in Westminster, so only 20 miles from my husband and 26 for me. Considering we won't get out work at 5pm, I assume we should be ok.

I don't think you really have to worry about safety in most communities.
--- That's great to know. The statistics on city-data scrares me. No offense, but there are so many towns with double digits of sex offenders.

I disagree that "most" large corporations are located in Denver or the DTC. Broomfield and Boulder have a large IT presence (I don't know what kind of work you are in), and there are lots of jobs all over the metro area.
--- I agree, but there are only handful large corp. in Broomfield and I don't know any in Boulder. I don't want to move before I land a job; and in the market condition like this, I can't afford being picky. Neither of us wants to sacrifice our career,so we just have to sacrifice commuting. I just keep my fingers crossed and hope everything works.

Thanks a lot for the input!!

You may want to consider living in downtown Denver, which is not as dangerous as you might imagine. Lots to do there with tons of restaurants, parks, pro sports, and other attractions. Boyfriend could jump on a Boulder Express bus from Denver's Market Place station and arrive in Boulder in about 45 minutes. No gas, no driving, and no stress. If he truly is working in downtown Boulder, he may be getting a free "ecopass," which gives you unlimited free rides on trains and buses in the Denver/Boulder metro area.

Depending on where you work in Greenwood Village, you might be able to take light rail from downtown Denver. Otherwise you could be looking at a 35 minute plus drive. Not bad and tons of fun living downtown. Sure rent is more expensive than the suburban places, but you could probably get by on one car between you and would cut down on your commuting costs considerably.

Look on craigslist for LoDo, Riverfront Park, and Downtown. You may not have considered this option, but I'd encourage you to look into it. Good luck to you.

I am dying to know how's traffic like if I drive from Downtown denver or maybe from Westminster. It might sounds absurd to locals, but I honestly very confused. It's only 14 miles from downtown denver to Greenwood village and only 26 miles from Westminster. If my schedule is 8 to 6. I don't think it will take me more than 1 hour, or I might be too unrealistic? I am trying to figure out we should split the commute or close to one and let the other take most of the hit. :-)
