I love Boulder myself. We moved to San Juan Del Centro out on Valmont and I Tend to think of the 5 years we spent there as one of the best times of my life... Guess it all depends on who you surround yourself with.

Tom,
its everywhere, here in philadelphia is the same in the city and suburbs, was the same way in portland oregon, mass, and new york.

vermont has lots of lefties but they are actually very open minded and accepting of different people. colorado springs is really right wing but i know lots of lefties who live there and they arent attacked, so you might want to look at other places.

a cool place is alexandria Va, mt pleasant sc, savannah, oregon city,or, san diego cal

Boulder is a very nice city, But it is elitist and it is a fake, trust-fund hippy town for sure.

LOL! It's all a matter of perception, do you fit in the clique or not? It's a fun place I can tell you that.

We loved it there.

Well ther ya go. I used to live in California; maybe not somewhere as affluent as the OC, but still pretty nice in the late 70s; the Valley. And we had a boat at Marina del Rey.

I always likened Boulder to a little version of SoCal in the midst of the Front Range! I know that sounds preposterous, but I don't know how else to describe it. Whenever I lived in Denver and went up to Boulder, it just always seemed a little bit warmer, a little bit more laid back, the snow was just a little bit fresher, and the trees were a little bit greener.

Would I have liked to live up there? I don't know. I guess. But my family was po. So I went to Metro State instead. It's good to see someone of a minority come in here and totally debunk the OPs thread description because how else would the rest of us ever know what is the truth and what's not?

I'm a minority and I have never felt any of things the OP posted about. Very little racism, I'm not saying none- since I don't believe that's true for any place. Honestly, Boulder is no different from any other major city in US and I've been here for 5 years now.

I'm a vegetarian, yes, but I think the OP hasn't really been in Boulder for long because if he did stay for long, he'd realize that most people don't care about what he eats. Yes, the Whole Foods & the Sunflower Markets are crowded but you won't find anyone proselytizing there. And they all carry meat! All Boulder has different to offer is that it has MORE than it's fair share of vegetarian restaurants & the people here aren't surprised when you tell them that you don't eat meat. [I was asked in a small town cafe in Montana last year - "No meat? How about some chicken? No? Sausage? Fish? NO???"]

In reading the original post I quoted previous posts about Boulder, and asked people if they agreed or disagreed as to whether or not Boulder is cliquish, elitist, or racist.

I had no intention whatsoever of stating whether or not Boulder is either racist or cliquish. I don't know. As I've said before in this thread, I had no intention in raising any controversies. Of course, as someone who may move there, it would unfortunate if either is the case.

The response has been overwhelming, and both positive and negative. I'm in the communications field, I'm reticent to admit that I have experience asking survey questions in a way that will generate hundreds of articulate responses on a message board. That's why the original questions prompted 13 pages of well-written, insightful, and passionate responses, and 7,000 views.

Overall, the responses are very thoughtful and valuable. Readers can draw their own conclusions.

Thanks for your responses!!!

It's the thread title itself that draws us to it and came across to me as being very negative.

Then the fact that you threw the question in there, it implies that you already think that Boulder is snobbish, cliquish, and racist.

That's the way I took it. It automatically puts people who live there and people who like and support the place into the defensive. It's like if I go up to somebody and yell at them and push them; I'm provoking them and forcing them to defend themselves.

This may not have been your intent; but here we are 129 posts later.
