I've been thinking about starting a thread about Boulder, (I was going to title it: "Why are people in Boulder so friggin' nice?") but I think my thoughts will be appropriate here.
I have a strange relationship with Boulder, I have no connections to it, but lately I've been having to go there a few times a week for work.
Every time I go there, it is an experience. I come home from it either hating it a little more or being pleasantly surprised.
I don't think the folks in Boulder are the least bit snobby, they don't act like they are better than you (I'm thinking suburban snobbishness here), they ARE better than you. They just don't need to let you know it, unlike those snobby suburbanites, who have to show you with their possessions, plastic surgery and attitudes.
I go to Boulder for work, I've gotten gas in Boulder, I've banked in Boulder, I've eaten in Boulder, I've gotten my haircut in Boulder, I've been to grocery stores in Boulder. What I've noticed about folks there, is that they are incredibly pleasant. They are helpful. I once needed directions around a hospital, and three nurses took time out of their busy schedule to lead me where I needed to go. That kind of thing is common in Boulder. Here in metro Denver, I'm lucky if I get a valid response if I ask a stranger a question.
I've been to two King Soopers in Boulder on multiple occasions (I love the croissants/donuts), and the atmosphere the grocery store employees provide is exactly what I'd want in my hometown grocery store. They come off as real American working-class folks, happy, pleasant, the kind of folks that would ask you how the wife and kids are, etc. I don't have that here in Aurora.
I haven't spent enough time in Boulder to determine it to be cliquish. However, I have previously said "Everybody there seems as though they are hiding the same secret," and I stand by that statement.
I don't think Boulder is racist, but I do believe it is not diverse, and I might go as far to say that people there wouldn't mind keeping it that way. There are really only a few types of people (of any race), in Boulder and anybody that has been there could tell you what types those are. I think we'd have to hear from a non-white Boulder resident about how it is like living there as a non-white.
Would I ever live in Boulder? No.
Why?
-Too expensive.
-Stupid red-light cameras.
-Stupid raised crosswalks on yielding turns.
-Stupid regular raised crosswalks.
-I don't think I meet the educational requirements (some college).
-That "secret" I mentioned earlier.
-I like more diversity.
What is good about Boulder:
-The flatirons/foothills are BEE-YOU-TI-FUL, especially in winter.
-The town itself is pretty as well, NO SPRAWL, thank god!
-I guess CU.
-People are nice.
-Bright blue sky.
-Girls/women (probably guys too, I'm not really checking them out), are all extremely HOT, I mean sizzling. I better shut up, I am spoken for.

-I'm running out of pros.
In conclusion, Boulder isn't for everybody, but if you are one of those somebodies that it is for, it is for you.
