Well as you know I already like to think ahead, so paddle boats sound like a blast... maybe an RC boat too who knows
I would still be interested to hear what the odds are to open enroll and how much we could actually count on that.
I mean if there are 100 spots and 105 people apply I like those odds. If it is like 100 spots and 900 people apply I don't want to have to rely on that for my child's education.

I think well over 50% get their first choice. Try this website: Boulder Valley School District for more information. It's a pain to navigate, but whatever.

I've not heard of any family whose kids had to attend the neighborhood school because they were not accepted at *any* of their choices (though not necessarily their first choice) for open enrollment in BVSD.
It seems like a game of musical schools, except when the music stops, everyone has a place. There are many focus programs, charter schools, etc., and so many famililes that are looking to open enroll all over the district, that "choice," even if not your first choice, always seems possible.

Ohh I am very familiar with their horrible navigation. Actually being a software developer I figured I might be able to "politic" my way in with offers of new shiny web sites
For being one of the top 40 high schools in the country Peak to Peak has the worst web site!
I checked around on there though and didn't see any numbers for the wait lists or what the chances are of getting accepted.

I take back what I said above about families not getting into any of their choices. Here's an article in the Daily Camera about this year's open enrollment:
BVSD open-enrollment letters in the mail : Schools : Boulder Daily Camera

I wonder how many of those were kids outside of the school district. I know a few Erie families that try to open enroll in BVSD and anyone outside the district gets a very low priority.
So..
3,972 Total applicants.
1,948 Got into first choice school (49%)
200 Got into second choice (5%)
71 Into third choice (2%)
17 Into fourth choice (>1%)
Looks like around 55% get into some school other than their neighborhood school. I would imagine a fair number of those people are outside of it.

It's there on the web. You just have to struggle through it. I actually posted the open-enrollment stats here on CD one time. The out-of-district kids are more likely to attend schools on the "fringes" of the district, e.g. Broomfiled, N. Boulder, etc.

Ok well we got back from looking at a few houses, we found a house in Weynand Estates and it is the same floorplan except about twice the yard and a walkout finished basement compared to the one in Waneka.
Anyone have any advice for Weynand vs Waneka? Will the schools care if you are in the district but live farther away from a school you are OEing too? They both feed to Lafayette elementary so that is the same. I just don't know Lafayette as well as I do Louisville, so any input on those two is helpful.

No difference as far as OE is concerned. One advantage I can think of for preferring Waneka Landing is the nearness to the Lake, but they're both lovely neighborhoods.
