Default Boulder residents are Philanthropic and Progressive

This article from today's paper shows that Boulder residents are Philanthropic and Progressive (meaning forward thinking, irregardless of political party) and giving back to the community. This is what attracts young people to cities like Boulder, when the residents care about the community that they live in.

Your posts are strange since in one you say boulder is snotty and another progressive. Maybe someday you'll be straight forward and say what you're really after? You'll get honest answers

Beware what you read in the Camera as the reporters there seem really interested in maintaining status quo and talk up Boulder for developers and often run down surrounding towns. Editor of Camera is crazy and I've seen him personally attack people that criticize Boulder.

The fact is that Boulder does talk a lot about giving back to the community, but giving to charity rates are among the lowest per capita in Boulder out of all places in Colorado. People are really not that generous in Boulder as far as actual cash out of pocket. There are a lot of volunteer opportunities. A lot of Boulder seems to be "great, but not in my back yard". There are people that walk their talk in Boulder. But it doesn't strike me as the majority of people. It's a good community, but a stressful community because of housing costs and density issues. I guess hypocrite is how I would describe Boulderites. You've got community leaders that live in places like Mapleton Hill and they're on city council and want to enforce housing size limits on new building b/c of energy issues. But they've already got their 15,000 square foot white elephant energy guzzlers on mapleton hill and say it's protected because it's "historic". Someone bought the old mapleton school there and wants to make it into condos and Mapleton Hill Neighborhood Association is like "no high density housing, it will ruin the character of the neighborhood". It's all about energy saving and high density space saving housing requirements until it's in their back yard and then the priorities change. And they've also built a moat around Mapleton Hill by closing streets and blocking traffic and dumping problems to the surrounding neighborhoods instead of sharing the burden. Not too neighborly in my opinion. But that is the way things work here.

Is that like the lady I saw in McGuckin's parking lot in her Desiel Mercedes spewing black smoke in my face with the bumber sticker that read "Love Mother Nature"?

I think a lot of Boulderites genuinely mean well but so many are also too busy patting themselves on the back for their philanthropy, organic lifestyle and spiritual awakenings to notice that they just blocked an affordable housing project or a free clinic being built in their neighbourhood

Sometimes they are way more concerned about the environment than about people issues.

Haven't we all put our own pet issue above people issues at one time or another?

I've spent my entire professional life in human service, and even my outside interests tend in that direction (education, children's issues, etc) but yes "at one time or another" I have put my pet issues above the rest. The deal in Boulder is that it's more than "at one time or another". Someone once commented on a council candidate that she came from the human service sector which was unusal. Most of the city council is from the environmental sector.

Oh dear, well as usual I'm dreaming of moving back to Boulder. Then I read these comments and remember what a terrible horror show that town is with all the loony crap you gotta deal with.

Thanks guys for reminding me of the hella downsides to Boulder.

I was also looking through some apartment for rent listings on Craigslist/Boulder lately. One had an entire rambling paragraph about some dumpy apartment that's supposedly great, and there wasn't any mention whatsoever about what kind of bathroom the unit has. It just reminded me of all the garbage, dysfunctionality, and extreme low-life idiocy I'd have to deal with again if I moved back there.
