I am considering a job opportunity in Broomfield and my wife and I are looking at boulder as a possible place to live.

We are in our late 20's and early thirties.

We are looking to buy a 2 bed 2 bath condo / town home that would leave her within walking distance of shops / stuff to do as we are a one car family.

What would be the best area for us to look? Are there any areas we should avoid?

There are no bad hoods in Boulder. If you are looking to buy a townhome in Boulder, then obviously price is a limiting factor for you, so perhaps you should just search in your price range and let that dictate how you find a home. Otherwise, it sounds like anywhere close to Pearl Street/downtown or maybe south Boulder would be best for you guys. Good luck!

Walking distance to shops? I guess then you imagine living downtown.
A 2/2 downtown will run between 400-500k. There is currently a 2/1 for 420 on 5th and a studio for 480k on 4th. Most of the condo housing downtown was built in the 70's. Houses will run you more than a million downtown but were probably built earlier and have character. If you can afford more, there are currently lots of nice million dollar plus condos going up in places like the Arete on Canyon.
Basically-new downtown-1000 square feet-million plus.
Not new-400-800k.

There are new condos in Holiday neighborhood for 500k ish that allow you to walk to things in their neighborhood-a coffee shop and a restaurant or two. But that area of boulder is up and down-strip clubs and homeless shelter, affordable housing, etc.

I wouldn't agree with people here that say there are no bad neighborhoods in Boulder. There are areas crammed with way too many people, cars. There are areas that definitely are run down. And don't fool yourself that this is paradise. People do get mugged, raped, murdered-all kinds of stuff here. But that doesn't always equate with bad neighborhoods. Jon Benet was killed in a really good neighborhood. And Boulder has quite the drug problem. Those guys live everywhere. You won't know until you are bothered by the myriad of cars pulling up constantly in the middle of the night. We've also has prostitution rings operating out of what was considered fairly "good"neighborhoods here too. Sigh.
But really, you haven't given us enough info. How about telling us what you want to spend and we can tell you where you are likely to find something?
