The cell phone service is definitely poor up there; last summer I took some friends up to see Eldora, which they liked BTW. Anyway, we found we did not have service till we were pretty much down the mtn into Boulder.

Jeffco is a very, very large school district and has a wide range of schools. Some are excellent, some not. I don't think you can generalize about the entire district. Many parents in the mountain areas of Jeffco drive their kids down to school in Boulder or elsewhere, since they commute to work anyway.

For true hippies, I should add that Ned is the ONLY town in the area that has successfully maintained a natural foods co-op for many, many years (since 1979). Boulder recently tried and failed. That tells you something about the town's vibe.

Is it possible to commute from Nederland to Denver? The road to Ned is described as a winding, rocky mountain road. How true is that? Can you go up and down in the snow?

I don't know how to get there except from Boulder. That road is not bad. I don't know what it's like in the snow. I do know a lot of people live in Ned and work in Boulder, also there is RTD service to Ned, so it must not be *too* bad. But Nederland to Boulder to Denver would be about a 1 1/2 hr commute.

I commuted from Nederland to downtown Denver for several years. I road down Boulder Canyon with my husband, and then rode RTD to from Boulder to Denver. Boulder Canyon is actually very well cleared during snowy months. That being said, there are always canyon closures when the weather is particularly bad. There are alternate routes when Boulder Canyon is closed. Coal Creek Canyon might be a good choice if you are commuting to Denver, too. The commute from Nederland to Denver is doable, but it does take a chunk out of your day.

The original post that you replied to was from 2008 so the traffic has gotten MUCH worse since then.

Add to post #39 that Boulder Canyon has been under construction for over 2 years! Still not finished.

I missed this post first time around. I just read the replies. OMG have things changed! Looking at home prices in post #21...they are now around $500,000 for a home that needs work. My neighbor across the road sold his house for $775,000 and it's nothing special.
The area where I live used to feel like a small mountain community. Sadly it has become a suburb of Boulder.
